D’Tigress thank President Tinubu as promised financial rewards hit players’ accounts

Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, has thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu after players and officials received the outstanding financial rewards promised following their historic 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket triumph.

The payment represents the final part of the Presidential Rewards announced for the team after its successful campaign in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

Final rewards paid to D’Tigress

The payment followed efforts by the National Sports Commission (NSC) to complete the process for releasing the outstanding funds.

According to the report, NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko recently met with the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, as part of the arrangements.

Amy Okonkwo praises Tinubu

D’Tigress captain Amy Okonkwo expressed the team’s appreciation to President Tinubu, describing the gesture as a major show of support for Nigerian athletes.

She confirmed that the team had now received the financial rewards, in addition to the houses and national honours earlier promised by the President.

Okonkwo also thanked the First Lady, the leadership of the NSC, the Nigeria Basketball Federation and NBBF President Musa Kida for their roles in supporting the team.

The latest payment means the commitments announced after the AfroBasket triumph have now been fulfilled.

Nigeria remain dominant in African women’s basketball

D’Tigress defeated Mali 78-64 in the final of the 2025 Women’s AfroBasket to claim a record-extending seventh continental title.

The victory also extended Nigeria’s unbeaten run in the competition to 29 consecutive games and made D’Tigress the first team in Women’s AfroBasket history to win five successive championships.
