Moses Itauma’s bid to make heavyweight boxing history ended in defeat after Filip Hrgovic produced a dramatic ninth-round comeback at London’s O2 Arena.

The 21-year-old Nigerian-British boxer had been chasing the chance to become the second-youngest heavyweight world champion in history, behind legendary former champion Mike Tyson.

Itauma controls the early rounds

Itauma entered the fight unbeaten in 14 professional bouts, with 12 of those victories coming by knockout.

He showed his speed and power throughout much of the opening eight rounds, landing combinations to Hrgovic’s head and body and appearing close to securing another stoppage victory.

Hrgovic survives early pressure

Despite taking heavy punishment, Hrgovic remained in the contest and waited for his opportunity.

As Itauma began to slow, the experienced Croatian increased the pressure and started to take control of the fight.

Hrgovic stops Itauma in ninth round

The decisive moment came in the ninth round.

Hrgovic backed Itauma towards the ropes and unleashed a sustained series of punches as the younger fighter struggled to respond.

Itauma’s corner eventually threw in the towel, forcing the referee to stop the contest.

First professional defeat for Itauma

The loss marked the first defeat of Itauma’s professional career and brought an end to his unbeaten record.

It also ended his opportunity to challenge Tyson’s historic achievement at such a young age.

Hrgovic becomes IBF heavyweight champion

Victory earned Hrgovic the vacant IBF heavyweight world title, making him the first Croatian heavyweight world champion.

Following the win, Hrgovic immediately turned his attention towards potential unification fights at the top of the heavyweight division.

Itauma still has time to rebuild

Although the defeat represents a major setback, Itauma is still only 21 years old.

His performances before the stoppage showed why he remains regarded as one of heavyweight boxing’s most promising young fighters.

The challenge now will be to learn from his first professional loss, improve his conditioning and return stronger as he continues his pursuit of a world heavyweight title.
