Nico Rosberg, the 2016 Formula 1 World Champion, has identified Kimi Antonelli's own mind as his primary adversary in the ongoing 2026 title race. Antonelli is currently on a strong trajectory to potentially become F1's youngest-ever champion at the age of 20, holding a significant points lead over his Mercedes teammate George Russell, Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton, and McLaren's Lando Norris.

With just nine rounds remaining in the season, the Azerbaijan Grand Prix marks the next event on the calendar, scheduled for Saturday. Speaking on Sky Sports' The F1 Show, Rosberg shared insights from his championship-winning year, highlighting the intense mental pressure that accompanies being a favorite.

The Mental Battle of a Championship Favorite

Rosberg explained the psychological impact of being in a leading position: "When you're really the big favorite, like he is now, it's like, 'oh my God, this is this is actually mine for the taking. I better not mess this up, I better not make these make stupid mistakes and unnecessary mistakes now because the World Championship is there for the taking'."

He elaborated on how these thoughts can lead to fear and a heightened risk of unforced errors. "As soon as those kind of thoughts come in, you start to get scared and you really start to get fear that you're going to mess something up completely unnecessarily because it remains that driving an F1 car and being at the front of the pack, of course, is one of the hardest things in the world to do."

He stressed the difficulty of consistently performing at the highest level without mistakes, noting that the intense concentration required for driving can be compromised by these mental pressures. "It is so damn difficult to not make mistakes and to be there, qualify time and time again and do good laps and not put it on the wall. It is easy to make mistakes because it's just so damn hard. Then your head starts to go, and it just takes capacity away from your concentration to drive well."

Despite these potential challenges, Antonelli has demonstrated remarkable composure, securing victories in the last two races, including a notable comeback drive from 19th to first place at Monza and another win at the Madrid circuit.

Rosberg's 2016 Experience

Rosberg contrasted Antonelli's current situation with his own 2016 title fight against Lewis Hamilton, which was much closer. In the final races of that season, Rosberg found himself mentally fatigued, impacting his performance.

"When I was going for my World Championship, the last four races, that's when it really went crazy in my head, and there was no chance in the world for me to do a pole position or to win another race in those last four races because I had like 30 per cent less capacity in my mind to actually drive well."

He quantified this mental strain, stating, "Usually, it's like 100 per cent to drive well, and now it was 70 per cent to drive well, and 30 per cent was just absolutely terrified to make some stupid mistake and lose my opportunity to win the Formula 1 World Championship, which is just so extremely big."

Rosberg emphasized the magnitude of this dream for both himself and Antonelli, who has been pursuing it since childhood. "It was a massive dream that also Kimi has been working towards since he's eight years old. So it's 12 years of dedicating his life, which is more than half of his life, towards the dream of maybe being F1 world champion. It's so big."

"That's the big one that we need to keep an eye out. It's really him against his mind now, so we see how that goes, but he's doing incredibly well."

Potential Threats from Rivals

While Antonelli has generally outperformed teammate Russell, Rosberg cautioned that the biggest threat could emerge from Mercedes' rivals if McLaren or Ferrari significantly improve their cars.

Lando Norris, despite being fourth in the Drivers' Championship, is seen as a major contender, having narrowly missed out on victories in recent races. McLaren is set to introduce new parts at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, while Mercedes plans a substantial upgrade package for the following race in Malaysia.

"The worst-case scenario is if suddenly McLaren starts to edge away, and maybe there's also a Ferrari improvement or something, and Kimi starts to drop back into the pack a little bit more," Rosberg warned.

He drew further parallels to his 2016 season, where a slight drop in performance led to increased pressure and panic. "That again is similar to where I was in my championship year, because I was not driving as well, I started to drop back into the pack in those last four races."

He recalled instances of struggling in qualifying and battling with Max Verstappen, illustrating how being closer to the midfield can heighten the sense of risk and anxiety. "Even in Mexico in qualifying until the last moment, I was actually only sixth in Q3 until the last moment. In each of those races, I was P3 at some point and not P2, and Max Verstappen was banging into me like every single race. If you were to drop back into the pack ever so slightly, again, the risk just comes up more and you start to get more and more panicked about things."
