Super Falcons midfielder Deborah Abiodun has been ruled out for the remainder of the 2026 season after her NWSL club, Washington Spirit, confirmed that she will undergo surgery.
The 22-year-old was initially expected to spend around two months on the sidelines, but the club has now moved her from the 45-day injury list to the season-ending injury list.

Washington Spirit announced that Abiodun will undergo surgery this week, bringing her 2026 campaign to an early end.
The Nigerian midfielder finishes the season with nine appearances in all competitions, including four starts and 320 minutes of action for the Spirit.
Abiodun suffers setback after international duty
Abiodun was an important member of the Super Falcons squad at the 2026 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Her injury is a major setback for both club and country, especially with Nigeria preparing for important international fixtures.
Olympic qualifiers also in doubt
The injury is also expected to rule Abiodun out of Nigeria’s 2028 Olympic Games qualifying ties against Comoros next month.
The Super Falcons are scheduled to face Comoros in both legs of the second-round qualifier at the Remo Stars Sports Complex in Ikenne on October 9 and 13.

Abiodun’s absence removes an important midfield option from the Nigerian squad.
Known for her energy and ability to contribute on both sides of the ball, the midfielder has become an increasingly important figure for the Super Falcons.
