Emma Raducanu finds inspiration in Andre Agassi’s journey to tennis resurgence
As British tennis star Emma Raducanu works to reclaim her position at the pinnacle of the sport, she has turned to the pages of Andre Agassi’s 2009 autobiography for guidance. The 23-year-old, who made history five years ago as the first qualifier to win a Grand Slam title at the US Open, is navigating a challenging phase of her career marked by fluctuating rankings and persistent physical setbacks.
Learning from a tennis icon
Raducanu, currently ranked 98th in the world, has found particular resonance in Agassi’s account of his own career resurgence in the late 1990s. During that period, the American legend overcame a four-year major title drought and a significant drop in the world rankings to climb back to the top of the sport. Raducanu noted that she was especially intrigued by how Agassi developed a personalized training regimen to navigate his professional slump.
Agassi, an eight-time major champion, expressed satisfaction that his experiences continue to offer perspective to current players. "It was literally the hope that if one person read it and it gave them hope, some tools to understand that they're not alone... then it was a success for me," Agassi told BBC Sport.
Advice on identity and performance
Reflecting on the pressures faced by modern athletes, Agassi offered direct advice to the young Briton. He emphasized the importance of focusing on daily personal growth rather than fixating on results or an unattainable standard of perfection. "You have to learn to be 100% of whatever percent you're at and be comfortable in your own identity inside of that," he stated.
Agassi also highlighted the difficulty younger players face today with constant public scrutiny, noting that it is significantly harder for them to disconnect from external noise compared to his own era. He encouraged a shift in mindset, advocating for players to find their own path rather than competing out of fear or external expectations.
Overcoming physical and mental hurdles
Raducanu’s recent career has been hampered by a series of health issues, including a stress fracture in her lower right leg and a post-viral illness that kept her off the court for several months. Despite these obstacles, she showed glimpses of her potential at the Queen's Club in June, where she reached her most significant final since her 2019 New York triumph.
Agassi, who is set to captain Team USA at the upcoming Laver Cup in London, remains a proponent of finding balance. He believes that by detaching one's self-worth from the immediate outcomes of a match, players can reach a healthier, more sustainable place in their professional lives.
