Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF) President Wale Edun has dismissed reports claiming that he reaffirmed the defunct Nigeria Boxing Board of Control (NBBofC) as the authority responsible for professional boxing in Nigeria.
Edun described the report as false and misleading, warning that further attempts to associate him with such a position could result in legal action.
Edun says meeting was misrepresented
According to the NBF president, his recent meeting with former NBBofC officials, including Remi Aboderin and Rafiu Ladipo, was not an endorsement of the defunct body.
He explained that the discussions were aimed at addressing concerns involving international professional boxing authorities and exploring possible solutions through collaboration with the NBF.
NBF-Pro remains the federation’s professional arm
Edun said he referred the group to NBF-Pro, the arm of the Nigeria Boxing Federation responsible for professional boxing in the country.
The NBF continues to maintain that NBF-Pro is the body tasked with the development and administration of professional boxing under the federation’s structure.
Edun threatens legal action
The federation president accused Aboderin and his associates of deliberately portraying the meeting as support for the former NBBofC.
He warned those involved to stop what he described as misrepresentation, adding that any repeat of the claims could be met with legal action.
NBF leadership backs ongoing reforms
NBF Vice President Omonlei Imadu also praised Edun’s leadership and the reforms being carried out within Nigerian boxing.
Imadu said the federation president’s support has contributed to the progress recorded so far and expressed confidence that the sport will continue to develop.
Dispute over professional boxing administration continues
The controversy comes amid ongoing disagreements over who should regulate and administer professional boxing in Nigeria.
For the NBF, its position remains unchanged: NBF-Pro is the recognised professional arm operating within the federation’s structure.
The latest statement from Edun is therefore intended to clarify his position and distance the federation from claims that the former NBBofC has been officially restored or endorsed.
